Gauge
To check your own gauge, make a sample block using the recommended weight of yarn and same size hook. Measure the block. it should be slightly smaller than 6" (15cm) across so that when it is blocked it will be exactly 6" (15cm) square. As a rule, if your block is smaller than required, make another sample using a hook one size larger. Also do this when the crochet fabric feels tight and hard. if your block is larger then required, make another sample using a hook one size smaller. Also do this if the crochet fabric feels loose and floppy Gauge can also be affected by the color and fiber composition of the yarn and the size and rand of the crochet hook, so you may need to make several blocks using different hooks until your happy with the size and feel of your crochet fabric.
